Durham Agriculture Leadership Program

Invest Durham in partnership with the Durham Region Federation of Agriculture and Durham Farm Connections is hosting the Durham Agriculture Leadership Program.

The Durham Agriculture Leadership Program is designed to provide farmers with the opportunity to grow their leadership potential and skills. This program will bring in top level speakers to address important topics in agriculture leadership. The program consists of four afternoon modules from January to April, and networking opportunities. Take advantage of this unique chance to connect with other leaders in our community and beyond and lead your agri-business into the future.

These four modules will address important topics in agriculture leadership, connect farmers to industry leaders, and provide networking opportunities.

Workshop topics and dates:

  • Module one: agricultural challenges and opportunities from a global perspective.

January 28, 12pm – 4pm. Nestleton Community Center

This session looks at global business economics, challenges and opportunities, Canada’s role in global agriculture and what it means for Durham Region farmers.

  • Module two: effective communication in business and beyond.
  • Module three: leading a resilient agri-business.
  • Module four: how to be a voice for agriculture.

February 25, 12pm – 4pm. Nestleton Community Center

This session provides tools for talking about difficult issues and how to effectively communicate and work with different personalities.

March 25, 12pm – 4pm. Nestleton Community Center

This session is where business and leadership intersect. Discussion focuses on examples and tools for making good business decisions - considering both people and business aspects.

April 8, 12pm – 4pm. Nestleton Community Center

This session inspires and teaches participants how to tell their story to non-farming audiences, and how to have a clear message when communicating with decision makers.

Lunch will be provided at each of the afternoon sessions. There is a cost of $25/module, or $75 to register for all the modules.

Register to attend and learn more.

A separate evening session for farmers and their families will be offered on February 25 entitled “Finding Fairness in Farm Transition”. This session focuses on tips, tricks, and tools to help with “fair” farm transition planning. Register and learn more here.

Participants are encouraged to sign up for all sessions.

The deadline to register for the first module and the discounted multi-day pass is on January 20.

Ptbo GreenUP Net Zero Farms Pilot

This Peterborough GreenUP Program is a pilot project designed to help a cohort of farmers in our region take a look at their farms' business and production from a greenhouse gas lens.  Agriculture is one of the few industries that can be both a sink and a source of greenhouse gases and thus is positioned very uniquely to be a big part of the solution to climate change.  Your farm may have already taken steps towards this and we are inviting you to be part of this year's cohort of farmers who take the next step to quantify your actions with a custom Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report

If you or any farm you know are interested in this program please visit our website at Net Zero Farms Pilot Project or feel free to reach out with questions.

The application deadline is Dec 15, 2024 with pilot project farms being discounted 75% for their participation as early adopters.
