Second Annual Farm Showcase Tour!

On September 28, the Peterborough Agricultural Roundtable hosted local elected officials, staff and agricultural leaders on a bus trip to visit three local farms. The Annual Tour familiarizes participants with farming in the area, ensuring local decision-makers have a good understanding of local agricultural issues.

Participants visited with Todd Payne of Asphodel Sheep Company, David and Cathy Stockdale  of Embrdale Farm, Janet Dawson of Indian River Acres (vegetable producers) over the course of the day. A big thank you to the Stockdales for providing lunch courtesy of Back Alley BBQ and to Black Dog Farm for delicious heritage apples!

The thirty-six participants had a chance to hear about local challenges including the current lack of abattoir capacity and the need for enforcement of weed regulations where weed seed is impacting farm operations.  They also learned about the family story behind each farm. See pictures from the Tour here: https://ptboagnews.com/2023-farm-showcase-tour-photo-gallery

The Farm Showcase Tour is an annual event, visiting different farms each year and providing a flavour of the range of farms in the County.

We are grateful that this event was made possible with sponsorship by Peterborough and the Kawarthas Economic Development.

The event ends with a hands-on, hybrid (virtual and in-person) workshop that will walk participants through how to take inspiration to action by building a sustainable action plan for their farm. The in-person event will be held at Wood Leigh Farms (Peterborough). Location details and agenda will follow registration.

The goal of the farm tour is to bring together aspiring, new, existing, and experienced farmers to inspire action toward each pillar of sustainability (economic, social, and environmental) on farms in East Central Ontario.

Successful farming businesses need to be sustainable, especially as climate change makes farms within East Central Ontario, and other regions, more vulnerable. It is hard to start a new farming or business practice, especially during uncertain times. This workshop will help in making sustainable actions more accessible.
