Meeting to discuss the Future of the Peterborough County 4-H Association - Tues April 21st at 7:30 p.m. Douro Arena

The Board of Directors of the Peterborough County 4-H Association is seeking input from 4-H members and families and the local agricultural community on the future of 4-H in our County.

The 4-H program has been an important part of growing up in rural Peterborough County.  The 4-H motto of “learn to do by doing” is evident with clubs about life skills such as cooking and outdoor adventures along with agricultural skills related to livestock, crops, machinery, etc.  But 4-H is more than learning these skills, it is lifelong connections and friendships along with leadership opportunities that provide benefits for a lifetime.

The success of 4-H requires a few things such as committed families, engaged youth and dedicated volunteers.  The number of volunteers has reached a critical low point with 11 volunteers in good standing from Peterborough County.  This low number of volunteers has resulted in the doubling-up of many roles (i.e. one person taking on multiple tasks) and is not sustainable for the longer term.

At the recent Peterborough 4-H annual meeting, it was decided that we should reach out to agriculture and rural communities in the area for discussion and input and ultimately to determine if there is enough interest locally to keep our county association and local clubs going.  Without renewed interest from new volunteers, the board would need to explore options that could include exploring the possibility of a merger with a neighbouring county 4-H association or a wind down of local clubs.

We are looking forward to your input on Tuesday April 21st at 7:30 p.m. at the Douro arena.  Thank you.

Peter Doris, President
