2024 Peterborough County Agricultural Wall of Fame Induction Ceremony

The Peterborough County Agricultural Wall of Fame Committee is pleased to announce they will be hosting their 2024 induction ceremony on Sunday, August 25th at 2 p.m. in the Agricultural Heritage Building at Lang Pioneer Village and Museum, Keene.  The purpose of the Wall of Fame is to recognize residents of Peterborough County who have made an outstanding contribution to the agricultural industry.  

This year’s inductees are:
Joseph Crowly of Norwood, Darrell Drain of Douro-Dummer, Joyce Pimmett-Millar (posthumously), Marg and Wayne Telford of Selwyn, and Carol and Dean Warner of Hastings.
 

Peterborough County Cattlemen 42nd Annual Barbecue

The Peterborough County Cattlemen extend an invitation to you and your family to join us on August 10, 2024 at the farm of Scott & Paula Cornish & Family at 2295 Hwy 7, Indian River, for the 42nd annual barbecue.  

The fun begins at 1PM with the Peterborough County 4H Beef members holding their Achievement Day.  Come out and support our youth as they compete for the champion showperson and champion animal for the year.

At the conclusion of the 4H show, there will be the Peterborough County Market Animal Show & Sale.  

Our delicious Ontario Beef barbecue will begin at 5PM.  Bring your lawnchairs and be prepared to enjoy an outstanding meal.  We encourage everyone to bring their own plates and cutlery, but will have those items available to use on site.

Advance tickets will be available.  If interested in purchasing a ticket(s) please send an email to peterboroughcountycattlemen@gmail.com, or pleahy@nexicom.net or contact any Cattlemen Director.  Cash or debit only!  Hope to see you there!

2024 Peterborough County Agriculture Profile Update

In 2023, the Peterborough County Federation of Agriculture and the Kawartha Lakes Haliburton Federation of Agriculture hired Planscape to update the understanding of the state of agriculture in these two municipalities. Farm Tour: Lunar Rhythm Gardens

Join Farms at Work and Lunar Rhythm Gardens for an evening exploring sustainable agriculture.

Founded in 2008, Lunar Rhythm Gardens is a 100-acre certified organic mixed vegetable and cow/calf operation in Janetville, Ontario. Come explore their Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) program, and get an up-close look at their season extension techniques, livestock, and working draft horses.

This in-person event is perfect for families, local food enthusiasts, and farmers looking for inspiration. Don't miss this unique opportunity to visit Lunar Rhythm Gardens and see how farming, community, and sustainability come together.

Jessica Foote's dedication to sustainable agriculture stems from her upbringing on her family’s dairy farm. Jessica beleives that farming is a powerful way to drive grassroots change and is passionate about educating and engaging her community. She strives to create symbiotic relationships between livestock and vegetables, and is one of few farmers in Ontario utilizing draft horses in her 15-acre market garden. She focuses on certified organic and regenerative practices, and works each day to leave the land better than she found it.

Drinking Water Wise Webinar Series: Drinking Water Testing and Treatment

In this one-hour presentation, join John Levie, a licensed professional engineer and Vice President of Engineering at Clearford, a water infrastructure management company, to learn about drinking water testing and treatment for individual systems, as well as conserving water through rainwater collection and gray water reuse.  

 

John specializes in the delivery of design, regulatory approval and construction supervision for new and expanded water and wastewater infrastructures. 

 

CA staff will begin the webinar with a brief presentation about the Best Practices for Non-Municipal Source Protection.

This workshop provides both practical and technical insights into biochar’s production and applications.

About the Hosts:

Ava Richardson co-runs Hello Farm, an organic market garden in Havelock, Ontario. After a decade of farming in Kyoto, Japan, Ava and Zenryu Owatari re-launched their farm in Havelock in 2021. They cultivate over 120 varieties of organic vegetables, including heirloom Japanese produce and local favorites. Their fresh produce and vegan meals are available at local farmers' markets and select wholesale customers.

Jeff Petit is the Business Development Manager at Haliburton Forest Biochar. With certifications in biological and nutritional farming, soil management, and microbe management, Jeff is passionate about organic and sustainable farming practices. Haliburton Forest Biochar, a division of Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve Ltd., produces high-quality biochar from the waste products of their sustainably managed forests.

Farms at Work is a non-profit organization working to protect healthy, active farmland across east central Ontario. For over a decade, Farms at work has been working to support farmers, new entrants, and landowners through education, mentorship, and research.

Sunderland Co-op & Gallagher Fencing presents the 2024 Pasture Walk!

Come on out on Thursday, June 6th from 5:30pm-8:30pm to educate yourself and improve your farm practices. Rotate through our 4 information stations including; Pasture mineral, ask the vet, rotational fencing using reel systems & soil sampling. 

Enjoy a BBQ supper provided by Peterborough County 4-H - all  proceeds benefitting Peterborough 4-H Sheep & Beef clubs. $20 per person, includes supper and all 4 education sessions.
