Ontario Developer & Peterborough County Farmers in project to Alleviate Hunger

Event date

Ontario Developer teams up with Peterborough County Farmers in project to Alleviate Hunger

For the first time the Canadian Foodgrains Bank is partnering with an Ontario builder in a project to alleviate hunger. Mason Homes, a Stouffville-based builder of homes is allowing Peterborough-area farmers access to a 100-acre parcel of land to grow crops for the Foodgrains bank.

A special information session on the project will be held on Thursday, March 28th at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church which is located at 1140 St. Paul’s Street. Guest speaker will be Julie Derksen who grew up on a grain farm in Saskatchewan. She is the Supporter Relations Manager with the Foodgrains Bank and will share more information on the Foodgrains Bank growing projects and in particular some highlights of her recent visit to Kenya where she saw firsthand the impact Canadian farmers are having in alleviating hunger in that region. The meeting is expected to last a little over an hour.

Call for Volunteers for Committees

The Peterborough County Cattlemen are asking our members to consider volunteering for a couple of committees that are being established.

As many of you are aware the Peterborough County Cattlemen have 4 sales/year at the Kawartha Lakes Community Sales Barn in Woodville.  These sales are held in conjunction with the Victoria Beef Farmers.   Wayne Telford has been involved with organizing these sales for over 40 years!!!  We all appreciate the time and dedication that Wayne and others have dedicated each year to host these sales, through the good times and not so good times.  In order for these sales to continue into the future, we are asking for volunteer(s) to assist Wayne.  If you would like to find out what goes into organizing these stocker sales, please contact Wayne email: margtelford1@gmail.com or call 705 292-9531 or contact Mike Fallis sunsetacres@nexicom.net for more details.

After the success of the Larry Leahy Memorial Peterborough County Steer Show and Sale, last year at our barbecue, the board has decided to set up a committee to further expand this event.  If you are interested in having your input for this show and sale and would like to find out more information, please contact Mike Fallis, sunsetacres@nexicom.net.

If you are attending the Farm Show on March 6 or 7, be sure to stop by the Peterborough County Cattlemen/Victoria Beef Farmers booth.
